Great to talk today - as always.

Here's a link to that fabulous inauguration dayphotowith the layered information. Way cool. I just love imagining a similar tool - class photo - with twittervision-like bubbles popping up - students talking, asking questions, collaborating, participating.

And I've attached here the rejiggered BLC agenda.

Have a good weekend, Gardner.

Inauguration Photo--Technology Review

Inauguration Photo--Photographer's Blog

I. Goals:

1. Computers will facilitate formulative thinking (as opposed to working on formulated problems)

2. Humans and machines can address fast, emerging situations flexibly

II. So what? Why the urgency?

III. Describe the symbiotic partners:

1. Humans

we think (cf. "As We May Think")

2. Computers

they process data (ditto above)

"a wide class of calculating, data-processing, and information storage-and-retrieval machines" (76 col. 2)
but what of communication?

"Computing machines will do the routinizable work that must be done to prepare the way for insights and decisions in technical and scientific thinking."
what is an insight? what is a decision?

IV. Obstacles in Licklider's time (still obstacles for us?)

1. speed mismatch

2. hardware memory

3. organization of memory (taxonomy? folksonomy? search--index vs. Google?)

question: where does the "gist" live?

4. "the language problem"

engineering vs. poetry--the semantics of symbols (cf. Frost)

the metaphor sandwich

5. I/O equipment (aka CHI or HCI)

notes:

new media studies- focuses on the window
-this can be difficult
the window is invisible
there's stuff outside the window

estrangement
the window makes us realize that we are not there.

^ I assure you, that was a beautiful ASCII illustration of a window with trees, a church, and mountains outside before the wiki formatting got to it.

The window is invisible, but it is there - through it we perceive what we are examining. The window shows us that we are not there.
