arturo reading notes:

"The essence of a medium is very much dependent on the way messages are embedded, changed, and viewed."- fantics

Digital computers can be all other media

Croquet: Alan Kay, Squeak, and the Virtual World as Platform

(Shelby's Class Notes)

How do we allow children to be communicative while still remaining innovative?

Why are children the key? Because they don't know what they are looking for, they have no preconceived ideas about what they should be looking for.
Intro to Kay: "This approach [the Dynabook vision] may be the central maneuver in new media's otherwise varied methodology"

How do you use the things you already know to create something radically different?
Children can create radically different perspectives because they don't really have any perspectives.

Linking back to the windows: we should realize the different perspectives and switch between them, but in reality, we prefer to just look out of one window.

The Annotation Assignment

"My Computer Romance": memoir by Dr. C.

Philip's notes:
Why can't students take this class again for credit, but the teacher can teach it again:

We've already learned the material, the teacher is not supposed to be learning from this class, he's supposed to already know everything.

"Confirmation Bias:" You tend to find the things you're looking for, you'd need to find something you weren't looking for to discover new things.

Childhood = Less conditioning, therefore kids don't all already think in the same, analytic manner.

Considering the computer from a radically different perspective = The central maneuver in new media's otherwise varied methodology

Gloria's class notes:
why children? --learning foundation. it's when learning begins. "at what point can you began to teach children enough to make them communicative but not shut down their capacity for innovation?"-C.

"This approach may be the central maneuver in new media's otherwise varied methodology"--intro to personal dynamic media

"radical" change--needs to start from the root--children are the root.
