4/7 Lucasfilm's Habitat
Gloria's Reading Notes:
-Lucasfilm's Habitat project: attempt to create a very large-scale, commercial, many-user, graphical virtual environment.
-" . . . a cyberpsace is defined more by the interactions among the actors within it than by the technology with which it is implemented."
-Rather than have produced the complexity of a real society, Habitat was a "computational medium" to "augment the communications channels between real people".
-conceptual rather than presentation level
-anarchists and statists in the virtual world justice debate
-"work within the system" a special kill-in-one-shot gun was accidently picked up by a regular player. This problem was solved by working within the system.
Gloria's Class Notes:
-Learning community expanded online.
-RSS feed
-Implementation: go beyond the information given. "model of the world"
-Virtual world: is a model of human model making. more about human behaviors than "virtual eye candy"
-"Working within the system"
-Pg 671 ""The more people we involved in something, the less in control we were. We could influence things, we could set up interesting situations, we could provide opportunities for things to happen, but we could not perdict or dictate the outcome."
-"What's the difference between a toy and a game?" There's a specific role. It doesn't show you what to do; it's about exploration.
