Gloria's Class Notes:

-"Invisible curriculum"- You take courses to get a degree
-Illich is saying the schooling we're in will end up shaping us in ways we don't even know.
-Doctor of Philosophy- "scholar/teacher of the love of wisdom"
-You cannot force a person to learn. Our schooling system just molds us into consumer and producer
-". . .we need new networks readily available to the public" The internet!
-Youtube-full of useable resources for education but also full of "nonsense"
There are too many things in society that are "certified". So much in "certified" education and "uncertified" education could actually be educational, but people lose sight b/c of the confined structure of current education.
-Youstream
-The internet could be an amazing source/tool for education.
-google's mission statement seems very educational
http://www.google.com/corporate/
-Citizen Science

Shelby's Notes:

Just some food for thought: It seems that people can't decide about computers in the classroom. On one hand, they provide us with information right at our fingertips, yet students often spend class time chatting and facebooking, instead of listening. Yet, is this really a problem? I know in our class, I have a minimum of 4 windows open, and I jump around, tagging things, taking wiki notes, etc. I'm using my computer to enhance my learning experience, but it would be foolish of me to assume that all classes are like this new media class. In fact, I would have a hard time putting my computer to good use in some of my classes, because either I am bored, or I spend the whole time frantically writing notes, both of which are hampered by having a computer. So should we change our format to fit the computer or are computers hampering our learning?
